NYU Faculty Statement of Support for Occupy Wall Street

NYU Faculty Statement of Support for Nov. 17 Student Strike in Solidarity with Occupy Wall Street

We, the undersigned faculty members of New York University (NYU), stand in opposition to Mayor Bloomberg’s eviction of the Occupy Wall Street encampment on Monday night, and support those students who are walking out on Thursday to express their solidarity with the movement.

We protest the mayor’s suppression of free speech by breaking up the camp at Zucotti Park. Occupy Wall Street has stimulated a widespread and previously neglected discussion across the country about growing inequality and the effect of concentrated corporate power on our political and economic systems. Regardless of our political views, as university professors committed to developing critical, independent, and civic thinking skills among our students, we appreciate how OWS generated a conversation about the trajectory of our society.

This is why we support the student walkout organized by our students on Thursday November 17, which will converge on Union Square to meet students from across thecity at 3pm.
